President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. agreed to adopt hybrid rice after meeting with SL Agritech Corporation (SLAC), a company specializing in hybrid rice research and development. PBBM also committed to providing subsidies and loan financing to encourage the conversion of 1.9 million hectares of rice farming to hybrid seeds over the next four years, following a proposal by SLAC. The hybrid system has shown a 41% better yield than inbred seeds and is expected to improve farmers' income and achieve national rice sufficiency.
