CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)--Since some chemical products have a health effect that may not be reversible, such as cancer, Filipinos are called to be vigilant, said Dr. Rutchell Simene, Toxicologist, Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), in a recent Talakayan sa PIA, media forum. The 4th week of June of every year is celebrated as National Poison Prevention Week. The theme this year is "Tungo sa Kaligtasan ng Kalusugan at Kalikasan, dinggin ang Panawagan." All the poison centers in the Philippines because there are 13 established poison centers, including NMMC, so the call of these poison centers to limit the use of plastics and to the agriculture community to not use the organochlorines as pesticides, said Dr. Simene. In the past, Dr. Simene shared, there was a lot of lead poisoning, but now it is controlled, but we cannot forget that some of the food products may contain heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. This generation is high-tech, which involves many metals, electronics, and some plastics. Further, he explained, "Wa ta kabalo, sige ta gamit og (we wouldn't know that if we continuously use) plastics like bottled water, it contains phthalates, other PCPs, and bisphenol A, and if we get exposed to a higher dose, it can cause cancer because the plastics are now labeled as endocrine disruptors and are already linked to diabetes mellitus, vascular diseases, thyroid problems, cardiovascular problems, and cancer." National Poison Prevention Week was declared a Presidential Decree by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. "Marami din mga tao kasi na suicidal, poisoning by deliberate ingestion of medications. Meron ding iba na overdose, sobra yung pagbigay ng mga magulang sa bata, so nakita nila that the statistics are very high and the mortality would climb to 2%. Kaya dineklara ni former President Arroyo na yung every 4th week of June is a National Poison Prevention Week," shared Dr. Simene. (Many people are also suicidal, poisoned by deliberate ingestion of medications. Others are also overdosed; parents give medicines that are beyond the medication or capacity of the child, so they saw that the statistics were very high and the mortality would climb to 2%. That is why former President Arroyo declared every fourth week of June a National Poison Prevention Week). (JMOR/PIA-10)
