Marcoleta Bats For More Barangay Funds

By Mona Lagbas

Cagayan de Oro City, Sept 14, 2024_ Sagip partylist Congressman Rodante Marcoleta today disclosed that he has filed a resolution for the creation of a commission that will exclusively attend to the needs of the country's barangays.

Marcoleta, in a press conference Saturday, lamented what he called as the sad plight of villages that are only receiving a measly funding from local government units and the Department of the Interior and Local Governments. He added that the allocation of only 2% from these institutions is never enough for the barangays to respond to emergencies.

Marcoleta stressed that even if barangay elections scheduled for December next year will push through, villages can only function dismally, especially in disaster-prone areas.

" Even if barangay officials are elected for their entire lifetimes, their efforts would go to naught, and they will be subservient to politicians with vested interests if their operating budgets are very minimal," he said.

Marcoleta, who is eyeing for a Senate seat in next year's midterm polls, proposed for the creation of a commission under the DILG that will address barangay concerns.
