LGBTQ Lawyer Assails Discrimination of Gays

By Rene V. Malferrari

Cagayan de Oro City, July 15, 2024_"The LGBTQ sector should be protected against discrimination,"said lawyer Samantha Tan in an exclusive interview with the Mindanao Reporter Monday. Atty. Tan, one of the more prominent leaders of the gay community in the city and as legal counsel of this so-called marginalized sector of society, assailed what he called as rejection of most of the members of this group.

"What is so disappointing is the non-acceptance or downright rejection by families of relatives who are gay. Of all sectors, families should respect the sexual preference of their kin," added Tan.

"Some, if not most people, do not appreciate the valuable contributions of the LGBTQ community to the economic and cultural aspects of our country," disclosed Tan.

"There should be clear-cut laws for the protection of our members. Legislators should focus more on our rights and privileges and not waste precious time on trivial matters and on political grandstanding,"he said.

Atty. Tan cited a recent anti-gay discrimination case wherein a transgender was arrested for using the women's comfort room. Tan bewailed the detention of the transgender as the jailing of the supposed offender was against the Safe Space Act, which only metes a penalty or fine and not imprisonment.

Tan also called out to "discreet"and active members of the LGBTQ community to unite and fight for their rights and privileges.
