CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) reiterated its firm stance on responsible mining during a press briefing on Wednesday, emphasizing the critical role of the mining sector in the local economy while underscoring the need for stricter regulations to prevent environmental degradation.
Engineer Armen Cuenca, the department manager of CLENRO, addressed members of the media at the Meet The Press program held at the Cagayan de Oro Press Club conference room. He explained that mining, particularly gold mining, is not only an integral part of the region's economy but also plays a significant role in meeting the needs of everyday life, given the widespread use of gold in various industries, including electronics, jewelry, and finance. However, Cuenca stressed that while legal mining operations are necessary for economic development, illegal and irresponsible mining activities continue to pose serious threats to the environment and surrounding communities. He pointed out that unregulated mining practices—such as the use of harmful chemicals, improper waste disposal, and the destruction of forested areas—are directly linked to environmental disasters like flash floods, soil erosion, and water contamination. “The economic benefits of mining cannot be denied, but we must ensure that these activities are conducted responsibly,” said Cuenca “Illegal mining, which is often driven by personal gain at the expense of the environment, puts both our natural resources and our communities at risk. Destructive mining practices are not only harmful to the environment but also endanger public safety.”
Cuenca highlighted the need for more effective monitoring and enforcement of mining laws to ensure that operations adhere to environmental and safety standards. He reiterated that CLENRO is committed to supporting legitimate mining ventures that follow regulatory guidelines but will continue to take a hard stance against illegal mining activities.
“The laws are clear. There is no exception when it comes to holding illegal miners accountable,” Cuenca stated. “We will pursue all legal avenues to ensure that violators face the full consequences of their actions and that mining activities do not harm our environment or the well-being of our people.” The CLENRO head also called on local communities, industry players, and other stakeholders to collaborate in promoting responsible mining practices. He emphasized that sustainable mining is not only about compliance but also about protecting natural resources for future generations. Cuenca’s statements come as part of Cagayan de Oro’s ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. Local officials have expressed their commitment to fostering a mining sector that benefits both the economy and the environment, with a strong focus on sustainable practices, job creation, and community welfare.
The city’s unwavering position against illegal mining, according to Cuenca, is aligned with the broader goal of ensuring that mining activities contribute positively to local development while safeguarding the region’s natural resources for generations to come.
