Camiguin PHO intensifies dengue awareness, gives insecticidal nets

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin (PIA)--Helping communities recognize the importance of taking preventive actions against dengue in support of ASEAN Dengue Day, the provincial health office (PHO) here held a dengue awareness campaign for 172 learners and provided six rolls of Olyset net to Quiboro Elementary School, June 15. From January to June 2023, the province recorded 66 dengue cases, of which 44 are from Mambajao, Mahinog (15), Catarman (2), Guinsiliban (2), and Sagay (1). This marked an increase in cases from 44 for the same period in 2022. Prioritizing the children in the awareness campaign, Provincial Dengue Coordinator Ruena Salcedo said, "Ang mga bata man gud sila man gyud ang dako’g risgo nga madengue. Ang mga bata kay kanang mga 7:00 a.m., mao mana ilang pag-anhi sa eskwela, magdula-dula sa plaza, and two hours pud before sunset, mao pud na ang ilang paggawas pud sa eskwelahan, mao nang sila ang atong gitarget ani nga activity." (Children are also the most at risk of dengue. The children come to school around 7:00 a.m., play in the plaza, and two hours before sunset is when they leave school, that's why we target them in this activity) In providing the Olyset nets, Salcedo said one roll can already cover two classrooms, and Quiboro Elementary School only has seven classrooms. The extra rolls will be installed in the teachers' room and the principal's office. Each roll costs around P11,000. "Treated na ni sa insecticide, maprotektahan gyud [ang mga bata], dili lang kay dili masudlan og lamok ang classroom, kung dili, inig duol sa lamok, mamatay na gyud pud ang lamok ani nga klase nga net," Salcedo added. (The net has been treated with insecticide; it will really protect [the children]. Aside from preventing the mosquito from entering the classroom, it will also kill the mosquito once it goes near the net) The PHO also emphasized that the community and every individual play a big role in preventing dengue. Thus, they remind everyone of the 4 o'clock habit, which is to observe cleanliness in their area. For her part, Pascuala Espiga, school-in-charge of Quiboro Elementary School, extends their gratitude to the Department of Health (DOH), the Provincial Government of Camiguin through the PHO, and the Rural Health Unit of Mambajao for choosing their school as the recipient of the Olyset nets and information campaign. "Importante kaayo nga matun-an ang information or educational campaign about sa dengue tungod kay usa kini siya ka problema or delikado kaayo nga mahimong hinungdan sa kamatayon asa usa ka tao or bata," Espiga said. (It is very important to study the information or educational campaign about dengue because it is really a problem; it is so dangerous that it can cause the death of a person or child) PHO is set to conduct the same activity at Maubog Elementary School in Mambajao, and they also target providing Olyset nets to all schools in the province.
