CAGAYAN DE ORO (PIA) — The City Council’s Public Utilities Committee, led by Councilor Romeo Calizo, convened on Thursday afternoon, January 23, 2025, at the City Council session hall to discuss pressing matters surrounding traffic management, public utility vehicle (PUV) services, and ongoing infrastructure projects.
One of the main issues tackled during the meeting was the proposed servicing agreement between City Hall, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and various PUV groups operating in the city. This agreement, which is still in the planning stages, aims to streamline transportation services, ensure proper regulation of routes, and address the growing demand for efficient and reliable public transportation in Cagayan de Oro. The proposed partnership would see key stakeholders working together to create a more organized and responsive PUV system that can better meet the needs of the city’s residents. In addition to the PUV servicing agreement, the committee also took time to review the enforcement of pedestrian lane use across the city. Councilor Calizo noted that the proper use of pedestrian lanes is critical to enhancing road safety for pedestrians, particularly in busy areas where traffic congestion often leads to dangerous conditions. The committee is expected to discuss further measures to improve the observance of pedestrian lane rules, ensuring that these spaces are respected and accessible for those on foot. Another key topic was the proposed road closures in the Cogon and Carmen areas, part of ongoing infrastructure projects to improve road networks and traffic flow. Councilor Calizo acknowledged the temporary inconvenience but emphasized that these closures are essential for upgrading Cagayan de Oro’s infrastructure to support future growth and better traffic management. Throughout the meeting, Councilor Calizo underscored the importance of collaboration between local government units (LGUs), transportation stakeholders, and the public to address the city’s increasing traffic concerns. He stressed that a coordinated effort is essential not only to improve public transportation services but also to create a safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation environment for the people of Cagayan de Oro.
The committee’s discussions highlighted the ongoing challenges and opportunities in the city’s public utilities sector. Moving forward, Councilor Calizo and the Public Utilities Committee are expected to continue working on solutions that will enhance the overall transportation experience for the city’s residents, while ensuring that key infrastructure projects are completed efficiently and with minimal disruption.
