A new wildfire, now raging out of control in Los Angeles County, has prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents as it threatens to spread through dry, windy conditions.
The Hughes Fire, which ignited late Wednesday afternoon near Castaic Lake, has already scorched more than 9,400 acres, forcing authorities to issue mandate. Located just 45 miles north of Los Angeles, the fire is burning in a mountainous area that borders both residential neighborhoods and schools. As the flames continue to grow, residents in nearby areas are scrambling to evacuate while others use hoses to dampen their homes in a desperate attempt to stave off the blaze. Fire crews are battling the flames from the air, dropping water and flame retardant in an effort to contain the spread. Although the fire has yet to damage any homes or businesses, its rapid growth is exacerbated by dry brush and gusty winds blowing at 20 to 30 mph.
These conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day, which could make containment efforts more difficult. In addition to the evacuation orders, authorities have closed parts of Interstate 5, a key route along the West Coast, due to the approaching fire.
This latest fire is part of a troubling pattern in California, where wildfires have become a year-round threat, aggravated by dry conditions and seasonal winds. Local officials are urging residents to stay vigilant as crews continue to battle the flames and assess the damage. As of now, the situation remains dynamic, with firefighters making steady progress, but authorities caution that it’s far from over.
