Mayor Klarex Allocates P103,000 for Barangays' Waste Management Programs

By: City Information Office

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – In an ongoing effort to address the city's growing waste management challenges, Mayor Klarex Uy has allocated P103,000 for each barangay starting from 2023 to support their Solid Waste Management (SWM) programs. This funding initiative is part of the city's broader strategy to improve waste management across Cagayan de Oro, aiming to reduce waste generation, promote proper waste segregation, and ensure more effective waste disposal.

The allocation aligns with Mayor Klarex’s call for stronger cooperation from local barangays in implementing Republic Act 9003, also known as the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. The law mandates the proper segregation of solid waste at the source, the establishment of material recovery facilities, and the creation of efficient waste disposal systems that will contribute to the city's sustainability efforts.

Engr. Armen Cuenca, head of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro), made the announcement during the Inyong Alagad, Mayor Rolando Uy program on Friday, January 17, 2025. He emphasized that the Local Finance Committee has highlighted the importance of ensuring this funding is included in the barangay budgets for 2025, ensuring that each barangay can effectively implement their respective SWM programs. In addition to the initial funding, Cuenca also revealed the launch of an incentive program, which offers P2 for every kilogram of residual waste that barangays deliver to the city's sanitary landfill. This incentive is aimed at encouraging barangays to properly dispose of waste, while promoting a more sustainable waste reduction strategy across the city.

Clenro data indicates that Cagayan de Oro City currently has a contract with the private waste collection company, Tencil, to handle approximately 33,000 cubic meters of waste per month. However, actual waste collected each month often exceeds this target, reaching between 38,000 to 40,000 cubic meters. This substantial gap further underscores the need for efficient waste management solutions and the implementation of better waste segregation and disposal practices.

Mayor Klarex’s initiative is expected to further strengthen the city's solid waste program, ensuring that each barangay is better equipped to manage waste effectively. The program aims to engage barangays in more active waste reduction and disposal efforts, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment for all Cagayan de Oro residents. By promoting cooperation, accountability, and sustainability, the mayor's efforts will help the city manage its waste challenges while improving overall public health and environmental quality.
