CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Statistics show an alarming 8.8% increase in poverty and homelessness in Cagayan de Oro from 2018 to 2021. Despite efforts by authorities, the number of people struggling with basic needs continues to rise, directly contributing to homelessness, particularly among those with disabilities and illnesses. One such individual is an unnamed homeless person in downtown Cagayan de Oro who suffers from severe eye conditions and is unable to walk. Like many others, he survives by begging for food and money, left without the resources or support to improve his situation. His case highlights the broader issue affecting many in the city—people who are deprived of education, healthcare, and employment due to illness, leading them to a cycle of poverty and homelessness. The lack of resources for people with disabilities exacerbates the cycle of poverty and poor health, making it difficult for them to achieve self-sufficiency. More inclusive programs like workforce integration and financial support are needed to break this cycle. Community leaders, local officials, and social service organizations must collaborate on long-term solutions to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations by focusing on opportunities for independence through investment in healthcare, education, and social services. Public awareness campaigns and community support systems are also vital in addressing the needs of those struggling with poverty and homelessness. Residents are encouraged to report cases of homelessness and poverty and offer assistance where possible, whether through donations, volunteering, or other efforts. Collective action from both the government and the community is essential to ensure no one is left behind, especially the most vulnerable.
