The Municipality of M'lang in Cotabato province is this year's big winner for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)'s National Best Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST).
The Community Award was given on November 27, 2024, the first day of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), which was held at Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.
Emerging as an exemplary implementation of CEST in the communities, the Municipality of M'lang has recognized the urgent need to support disadvantaged members of society by partnering with DOST to help vulnerable groups such as Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), farmers, and solo parents.
Particularly in Barangay Dunongan, the local government of M'lang has ongoing project developments as part of its commitment to inclusivity and comprehensive support through DOST.
Meanwhile, the Municipality of Bauko of the Mountain Province placed First Runner-up for providing support to local traders.
The weaving community in Barangay Baraclayan, Miag-al, Iloilo province was the Second Runner-up for improving weaving center facilities and integrating weaving skills into the school curriculum.
Northern Mindanao's livelihood for deaf students of Bukidnon National High School Special Needs Education Program in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, was one of the eight finalists for the CEST Community Award.
In his message, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said CEST continuously and consistently assisted vulnerable communities by providing relevant technologies and innovation that includes climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction management, environmental protection, among others.
"With many regions in the country experiencing high levels of poverty, these interventions are meant to bridge the gap between vulnerable communities and available resources," he said.
Solidum also said from 2023 up to the third quarter of 2024, the CEST program extended assistance to more than 1,100 communities in the country. (DOST PR)
